What to wear to a job interview

Here are a few basic tips to help you make the best possible first impression at your job interview:

Colour

Choose a neutral colour such as black, grey, camel, olive green or navy blue. Combine with a white shirt or neutral coloured knit top and match your shoes to your outfit.

The blazer

A blazer or jacket will give you a professional, confident appearance.

Slacks or Skirt

You want to feel comfortable during the interview, so choose the one that best suits you. Skirts should be a tasteful length, just above the knee and worn with pantyhose. Be sure slacks fit well. Too tight will look unprofessional and too baggy will look sloppy.

Suit or coordinates

The position for which you are interviewing plays a big role here. For professional positions, the suit is always the safest and most professional. More casual work environments usually have a smart casual dress code. Despite a casual feel, dress up a notch and still include a jacket and neutral colours to show you mean business.

Shoes

Even during the summer months, avoid completely open toed shoes or sandals. Heels are perceived as professional, but if you aren’t comfortable in them, choose a comfortable height so you are not tottering around when you make your approach for that first hand shake!

Shirt or Knit

Choose a crisp collared shirt or short sleeve knit to wear under your jacket, depending on the weather. You want to appear cool and at ease, so avoid thick knits and long sleeved blouses under your jacket.

Hair and Make-up

Go light on the make-up choosing a neutral lipstick and eye shadow. Make sure your hair is neat and secure so you are not constantly brushing it off your face and go light on the perfume.
