How to look youthful without dressing like a teenager

Have you ever heard the horrid expression, ‘mutton dressed up as lamb’? Well you don’t want it directed at you, so stop shopping where your teenaged daughters shop. Today, 50 is the new 30. Middle-aged women work hard at staying fit, healthy and slim. But what are we supposed to wear? Skinny jeans, mini skirts and midriff tops are for the under-30 set. But we can still show off our fabulous form, in figure-flattering, quality clothing.

One of the most important wardrobe pieces you should own is a well-cut pair of jeans. You don’t need to squeeze yourself into a pair of your daughter’s ripped skinny jeans just because you can. It is not a flattering look for a woman of middle age. Neither are hemlines that fall short of the knee. Play up your best features: your décolletage, your shapely calves, etc. Experiment with clothes. Try different looks on to see what best flatters your body. If you look good in wide-leg, flowing pants, don’t try to wear slim-legged pants, even if they are the hot look of the moment. Know your body and learn what looks good on you.

Understated hair and makeup is the finishing touch to your classy, polished look. Too much colour on your face and too young a hairstyle will probably not suit you, no matter how popular the look may be.

Consult with the fashion experts at Florence’s Finery to find solid looks that suit your lifestyle. The owners are two very hip middle-aged women who know how to dress without raiding their daughters’ closets. At Florence’s, you will find plenty to choose from without looking like you stole your daughter’s clothes.
