Express your own personal style without breaking the bank

Fashion is constantly dictating new looks to us, the consumer. But if we continue to buy every fashion fad and trend that comes out, we will soon be broke and our closets will be overflowing with out-of-date pieces that we no longer feel comfortable wearing.

The most sensible way to express your own personal style is not to buy complete outfits in a certain look, but rather to accessorize. Invest in a few key foundation pieces that are timeless and classic: the little black dress, a sturdy sport jacket, good dress pants and a quality pair of jeans, a crisp white shirt; tees in bright popping colours and a floral blouse.

Buy quality. If you invest in solid wardrobe pieces, they will hold their shape and last longer than their cheaper cousins. If you choose classic mix-and-match pieces, they will coordinate into more looks and you will wear the pieces more often. Think ‘cost per wear’. A jacket or pair of pants that you wear every week for their versatility and style is worth far more to you than something you bought on sale that quickly lost its shape and went out of fashion.

Start with a foundation of pants and shirt or simple black dress. Next, add jewellery, a scarf or jacket (and maybe even a cap!) to change the look from work wear to dressy to funky and casual. Great accessories to have on hand are: a leopard-print scarf in a sheer fabric; a chunky chain necklace in gold or silver; bangles or a charm bracelet; hoop earrings; dangly earrings; cocktail rings; a poor-boy cap.

Learn to mix and match to change your style. Jeans are softer and more feminine when partnered with a floral blouse. The same thing happens when you wear a jean jacket with a floral dress. Just don’t wear the jean jacket and jeans together. That’s a big no-no.
